Thank you! I have 2 HS students, so that’s 14 teachers with different assignment styles. Even though I feel like we are Schoology/Infinite Campus pros after 4 years, even though I taught HS and my husband teaches college, we have a very hard time finding out what’s coming up, what’s missing, and what’s going on.
I’m told to “Look in IC”… which only tells me what is missing after teachers have graded… too late.
I’m told to “Look in Schoology”… which has awesome “overdue” and “upcoming” lists… that most teachers don’t post in.
I’m also told by 14 teachers that “I always put my assignments HERE”… here being the last slide of a slideshow, or a buried calendar, or usually some google doc that parents don’t have access to.
In my weekly searches for my kids’ assignments, there are FOUR different types of password blocks that I don’t have access to.
There are things that I love… teachers who post a weekly agenda/overview… on Sunday. Or teachers who give kids a paper copy of all the assignments for the next unit/month.
teachers will balk at this. They use HW7 and HW3 students don’t know what it is, they have to go look. Our school’s teachers are not using the same platform either. Do you know that I have to look at last week’s homework because last week Monday a teacher put a due date of next Tuesday; or, another teacher may have said, “due ” and that means today, otherwise a long range date would be added. I look over last Monday through Friday as they may have an assignment on Tuesday that is due next Monday…….Maddening! It is not fair to my daughter or I but no one else seems bothered by this. Lindsey may be the only kid in her class struggling with executive function.
Wish the information you suggested was in the guides for my HS kid. Constantly have to call or email the teacher. Still in limbo. Nothing is actually clear. Kid definitely is having EF issues and I have to untangle communication.
As a parent with some executive brain challenges most likely and a teen with these challenges, I really love what you’re saying and how freeing it is to have a system that works. Less is more as you said also. I remember 30 years ago when I first started studying / doing Tai chi, the Tai chi instructor says less is more.

I so wish this were common practice for teachers. Your system of including links, Loom files and other important instructions is great. That is what I end up doing for my kids much of the time when I can. Schoology, Canvas, and Google Classroom (my 3 kids’ schools use all of these) have so many places to look – and things are not necessarily organized. It is frustrating as a parent and I am sure as a student to have 10 assignments listed as ‘missing’ when they were actually turned in because it was a reading assignment which can’t really be ‘turned in.’
I signed up for weekly updates to see if my kids are on the right track, but more often than not, I get upset because of all of the missing assignments that look like 0s, but aren’t. It is just messy.
I am sending my kids’ EF coaches and their learning specialists the link to this video so maybe some of these techniques can be considered.

Besides figuring out missing /overdue work, as a parent my frustration is when teachers post the assignment in schoology but the assignment is done on paper in the classroom but shows up as missing work. Each teacher in middle school has a different communication style and your video summarizes the confusion perfectly. We have a 6th grader and 8th grader. Both have dyslexia and younger has ADHD; Both are really smart.
Putting dates on assignments and putting all of the material for a topic in one place especially when it straddles more than 1 week.
Your suggestions on the calendar are brilliant and much needed in our school.
